About Our Soap

Natural fruit, vegetable, and nut oils

Olive Oil - a therapeutic oil packed with antioxidants and Vitamin E that is easily absorbed by the skin. Heals, soothes, and protects. Nothing beats olive oil for creating an exceptionally gentle and moisturizing soap that cleans without drying out your skin. The main ingredient in all of my soaps.

Organic Coconut Oil - a rich, saturated oil that moisturizes and protects skin. Creates a long-lasting soap that cleans well, with oodles of creamy bubbles.

Organic Palm Oil (sustainable source) - a solid oil that creates a gentle, long-lasting bar of soap. Organic, sustainable palm oil is grown and harvested in a responsible, eco-friendly way.

Castor Bean Oil - a super rich oil that draws moisture to the skin and creates a dense, foaming lather. Pressed from the castor bean plant, a tropical plant native to the Mediterranean and Africa.

Sodium Hydroxide (Lye)
- while you would never want to put plain lye on your skin, it is absolutely essential for turning the vegetable oils into rich, creamy, moisturizing soap. Without lye, you can't make soap! The secret is a precise recipe and careful measurements so that there is just enough lye to combine with the oils and create a perfectly crafted bar of soap. Unlike the harsh lye soap that Grandma used to make, where "eyeballing it" was the best method of measuring, all of my recipes are calculated down to 1/100th of an ounce. My soaps are also superfatted, which means there is a small percentage of moisturing oils left in the finished soap to nourish your skin. There is NEVER any lye left in the finished soap - it breaks down and gets completely used up in the soapmaking process.

Some handmade soap makers choose to list their ingredients as "saponified oils" rather than listing the oils and lye separately, but there is no difference in how the soap is made. The word "saponified" means that the oils have been combined with sodium hydroxide and turned into soap. So, another way of listing the ingredients of Ellie's Handmade Soap would be "Saponified oils of olive, coconut, palm, and castor". Different wording, same ingredients!
